Jako, że Arjen Lucassen jest tytanem pracy, toteż na nowe krążki Ayreona nie trzeba było zbyt długo czekać. Tym razem zamiast metal opery otrzymaliśmy dwa osobne albumy określane przez samego Anthony’ego jako „sofciarski” (recenzowany „The Dream Sequencer”) i „metalowy” („Flight of the Migrator”).

Po wydaniu dwóch albumów pod szyldem Ayreon Arjen Lucassen popełnił solową płytę z coverami pod tytułem „Strange Hobby”, a w międzyczasie miał dwa lata na pozbieranie myśli, skomponowanie space opery z prawdziwego zdarzenia i skompletowanie miażdżącego składu.

Debiut Ayreon wypełniony był sławami holenderskiej (i nie tylko) sceny progresywnej i z pewnością można było liczyć na kontynuację konceptu. Nadeszła już rok później, ale tym razem w skrajnie minimalistycznej formie- Arjen Lucassen i dwóch gardłowych.

Po odejściu z Vengeance Arjen Lucassen wydał solową płytę, która przeszła bez echa i dziś jest raczej ciekawostką dla jego fanów. W połowie dekady, ponoć z nożem na gardle (jak przyznaje w wywiadach) uruchomił swój flagowy projekt, dzięki któremu już za kilka lat zapisze się złotymi zgłoskami w historii metalu. Mowa oczywiście o Ayreonie.
